The American Psychological Association’s (APA) Committee on Women in Psychology selected Associate Professor Cirleen DeBlaere as a 2022 recipient of its Emerging Leader for Women in Psychology Award. The award recognizes Dr. DeBlaere for her powerful voice and significant scholarship, teaching and mentoring in the field of psychological science.
Dr. DeBlaere is the program coordinator of the Counseling Psychology doctoral program in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD), and among her many roles, she is also faculty associate for professional development in the Office of Faculty Affairs, and a senior faculty associate for The Graduate School.
In her research and scholarship, Dr. DeBlaere examines the experiences of individuals with multiple and intersecting marginalized identities, with a particular emphasis on the experiences of women of color and sexual minority people of color. To date, her work has focused on the links of minority stressors (e.g., discrimination, prejudice, stigma) to mental health and potential intervening factors in these links. She also examines the role of cultural humility in clinical practice, supervision, and training. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
Dr. DeBlaere is a co-principal investigator of ADVANCE-IMPACT, a new program funded by a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to adapt and implement practices aimed at increasing the number of women, particularly women from underrepresented minority (URM) backgrounds, who are recruited, promoted, and retained in STEM tenure track positions.
She is also a faculty affiliate with the CEHD’s Ken Matheny Center for the Study of Stress, Trauma, and Resilience, which recently received a $6 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation to better understand intellectual humility, defined as recognizing and owning our intellectual limitations in the service of pursuing deeper knowledge, truth and understanding.
