Georgia State University honored exceptional faculty with the Celebrating Faculty Excellence event. Honorees included newly appointed and re-appointed Regents’ Professors and GSU Distinguished University Professors, as well as GSU faculty award winners and newly promoted and/or tenured faculty. The event also recognized the Experiential, Project-based, Interdisciplinary Curriculum (EPIC) program, which was the inaugural recipient of the University System of Georgia’s Regents’ Award for Excellence in High Impact Practices and Experiential Learning.

Regents’ Professors
Regents’ Professorships are bestowed on the most distinguished faculty of Georgia State University, whose scholarly achievements are recognized both nationally and internationally as innovative and renowned. The appointment is made by the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents on recommendation of the President of Georgia State. (More about the professorship is available here.)
Balasubramaniam Ramesh
Computer Information Systems
J. Mack Robinson College of Business
Dr. Ramesh is the George E. Smith Eminent Scholar’s Chair and Chair of the Department of Computer Information Systems as well as a Professor in the Department of Computer Science. His research focuses on modeling and supporting knowledge-intensive activities in complex organizational contexts. Dr. Ramesh has been identified as among the top 1% of global researchers in Information Systems, with his work being cited over 9,000 times. He is the Co-PI on a $10 million grant from the Department of Defense to create a Center of Excellence in Advanced Software focused on Responsible AI and Human-AI collaboration. Dr. Ramesh was also the recipient of the USG Board of Regents’ Hall of Fame Teaching Excellence Award.
S. Tamer Cavusgil
International Business
J. Mack Robinson College of Business
S. Tamer Cavusgil is the Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair and Executive Director for the Center for International Business Education and Research in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. He is a renowned international business scholar and is ranked 9th in the U.S. among the World’s Top 100 Marketing Scholars and his work has been cited over 62,000 times. He co-founded the Consortium for International Marketing Research, an international research consortium with a network of over 300 international business scholars. He serves as Dean of the Fellows of the Academy of International Business; additionally, the S. Tamer Cavusgil Best Paper Award was established in his honor by the American Marketing Association.
Andrew Gewirtz
Institute for Biomedical Sciences
Dr. Gewirtz specializes in research on innate immunity, microbiome, intestinal inflammation and obesity/diabetes. Inflammation plays a central role in many disease states, and his goal is to understand the normal mechanisms by which pro-inflammatory signals protect against microbes and discern how they go awry in disease states. His primary area of focus is on the intestinal epithelium.
Distinguished University Professors
The appointment of Distinguished University Professor at Georgia State University is intended to recognize a sustained and outstanding record in scholarship and instruction, and to provide the impetus for continuing high achievement. Distinguished University Professors are expected to serve the University as exemplary faculty members by contributing to its research, instructional, and service missions.
The term of the Distinguished University Professor is five years and may be renewed once upon successful re-application and re-evaluation. No more than 5 percent of the University’s tenured faculty members may hold this title at any time. Learn more about the professorship here.
New Appointments
David Houchins
Department of Learning Sciences
College of Education & Human Development
David Houchins’ research focuses on identifying evidence-based literacy strategies for incarcerated youth and translating those strategies to feasible classroom teacher practices. He has secured over $10 million in grant funding to support his work, including a current $3.4 million grant from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) that is 1 of only 2 active IES projects in the U.S. focused on adjudicated youth. Dr. Houchins also extends his interests to his mentorship and service. For example, serving as President of the Council for Exceptional Children Division of Research.
Sang-Moo Kang
Center for Inflammation, Immunity & Infection
Institute for Biomedical Sciences
Dr. Kang’s research focuses on the development of cross-protective vaccines against respiratory viruses. Since joining the faculty at Georgia state, Dr. Kang’s research has culminated in approximately 170 peer-reviewed publications in top outlets in his field, including the Journal of Immunology. He has also been highly grant productive, securing over $11 million in external funding. He is currently the PI of a $2.6 million NIH R01 grant focused on developing a universal flu vaccine. Dr. Kang has also mentored 11 PhD students and almost 30 postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists.
Todd Maurer
Department of Managerial Sciences
J. Mack Robinson College of Business
Dr. Maurer is Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Research and Professor in the J. Mack College of Business. He is an internationally recognized scholar in the area of organizational behavior, particularly employee and leader development. He was recently recognized as being in the top 2% of Business and Management Researchers worldwide, both within the past year and over the course of career. Impressively, his contributions have been recognized broadly with such awards as the Outstanding Human Resources Development Scholar Award from the Academy of Human Resource Development and his election as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.
Dominic Parrott
Department of Psychology
College of Arts & Sciences
Dr. Parrott’s research focuses on alcohol-related violence and aggression against sexual and gender minorities. He is a highly productive scholar with approximately 140 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited over 7000 times. He has also been PI or co-PI on 7 NIH grants totaling close to $10 million. Dr. Parrott is the founder and director of the Center for Research on Interpersonal Violence, a college-level interdisciplinary research center, inclusive of collaborators beyond the College of Arts and Sciences.
Josh Russell
Department of English
College of Arts & Sciences
Professor Russell is the Director of the Creative Writing Program and a Professor in the Department of English. His professional interests include flash fiction, creative non-fiction, as well as lyric essays, and he has published in all of these genres in highly selective venues. He has published 4 novels and collections of short stories, one novella, an Artist’s book, and over 100 pieces of short fiction and creative non-fiction. His work has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Independent Publisher Book Award Bronze Medal for Literary Fiction, and he was the recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts Literature Fellowship in Prose.
Shannon Self-Brown
Health Policy & Behavioral Sciences
School of Public Health
Dr. Self-Brown is the Chair and a Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Behavioral Sciences. She is also a Co-Founder and Co-Director of the National SafeCare Training and Research Center. Dr. Self-Brown has an internationally-recognized program of research on child maltreatment prevention, trauma, and implementation science. She has over 120 peer-reviewed articles and, in the past 5 years alone, earned over $12 million in federal grant funding. Beyond her research program, Dr. Self-Brown has also been recognized for her leadership and mentoring contributions. She was the recipient of the School of Public Health’s Outstanding Service Award and the inaugural recipient of the Kavita K. Pandit Mentoring Excellence Award.
Kris Varjas
Counseling and Psychological Services

Dr. Varjas is Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies and a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services in the College of Education and Human Development. Her internationally-recognized research focuses on mental health concerns in schools and communities. In addition to her over 300 peer-reviewed and invited national and international presentations, her publications include 4 co-authored books and approximately 70 peer-reviewed journal articles. She has also secured over $13 million in funding as either a PI or Co-PI. Dr. Varjas developed the only international school psychology course in the U.S and was recently elected to serve as President-Elect for the International School Psychology Association.

Lisa Armistead

Dr. Armistead is Dean of the Graduate School and Professor in the Department of Psychology. While having served in various leadership roles at Georgia State for over 20 years, Dr. Armistead maintains an internationally-recognized research program in the area of parenting and family relationships in the context of maternal HIV status. She has published approximately 130 peer-reviewed articles in top outlets and has been continuously funded as a PI or Co-PI by external grants since 2018, including a recent $2.3 million R01 grant from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development.
Lindsey Cohen

Dr. Cohen is the Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Psychology. His research focuses on the assessment and treatment of medical stress and pediatric pain management. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed journal articles in top journals in his field and his work is currently being funded by 2 NIH grants totaling over $5.5 million. Dr. Cohen has also received numerous university and national awards recognizing his outstanding teaching, mentoring, and service activities, including the Michael C. Roberts Award for Outstanding Mentorship.
Cynthia Nau Cornelissen

Institute for Biomedical Sciences
Dr. Cornelissen is Associate Director and Distinguished University Professor of the Institute for Biomedical Sciences with a highly successful research program focused on sexually transmitted infections. Her research has been published in the most high-impact journals in her area and she has secured over $13 million in external funding since joining the Georgia State faculty in 2019. Dr. Cornelissen maintains this level of productivity while engaging in multiple leadership and service activities beyond her Associate Director role, including serving as the graduate program director for IBMS.
Jonathan Todres
College of Law
Professor Todres is Distinguished University Professor in the College of Law. His work focuses on issues related to children’s rights and child well-being. Impressively, since his last appointment as a Distinguished University Professor, he has published two books, including the 36-chapter volume, The Oxford Handbook of Children’s Rights Law, and has 2 additional books in print this year. The book, Children and the Law: Doctrine, Policy, and Practice (8th Edition) is the leading casebook on children and the law. Dr. Todres is the current Chair of the Board on Children, Youth and Families of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

This award recognizes a tenure-track faculty member for outstanding achievements across all three areas of scholarship, teaching and service. It is open to Georgia State graduate faculty members at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank who have been at Georgia State University for at least four years.

Dr. Spears is an Associate Professor in Health Policy and Behavioral Sciences and Interim Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Public Health. In addition to her exemplary teaching efforts and service to her college and profession, Dr. Spears’ research program on digital health technology and mindfulness-based interventions, has been highly impactful. She has been awarded over $24 million in grant funding and was selected to join the Roster of Experts on Digital Health by the World Health Organization.
Lauren Margulieux

Dr. Margulieux is an Associate Professor in the Department of Learning Sciences in the College of Education and Human Development and founding Director of the Snap Inc. Center for Computing and Teacher Education. In addition to exceptional teaching and leadership experiences, such as serving as an Associate Editor of the journal Computer Science Education, her publications in the area of computer science education have been cited over 1600 times and she has been awarded over $9 million in research grants, including a prestigious career award from the National Science Foundation.

This award recognizes a non-tenure track (NTT) faculty member for outstanding achievements in their assigned areas of specialty (scholarship/creative works, teaching, and/or service). It is open to Georgia State faculty members who have been at the institution for at least four years at an NTT faculty rank.

Alhadji Thrash

Professor Thrash is a Professor of Practice and the Program Coordinator for Music Management in the College of the Arts. He has translated his music industry expertise into innovative instruction, mentoring, curricular development, and grants. For example, as the lead investigator of a Research Innovation and Scholarly Excellence or RISE award, Professor Thrash launched MTM Standard, GSU’s first ever student-led record label and sync licensing company, which has already released multiple singles. His curricular transformations also resulted in the Music Industry program growing by 500%.
Erin Vinoski Thomas

With an exceptional record of research and scholarship, Dr. Erin Vinoski Thomas has involved students and mentees frequently with research published in peer-reviewed publications, is involved in experiential learning such as Virtual Exchange, and has been recognized by the Georgia State School of Public Health for her work in mentorship. The interim director of the Center for Leadership in Disability at the School of Public Health, she was recently selected as the school’s inaugural Crimmins and Ramirez Distinguished Scholar.
About This Award
This award, named in honor of Dr. Kavita K. Pandit, Professor Emerita and former Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs, recognizes a faculty member who has shown an outstanding dedication to the mentoring of other faculty members. As identified by the Collaborative on Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) faculty satisfaction survey and action plan, the award helps to fulfill the need to increase mentorship at Georgia State and to recognize excellence in this pursuit.
The winner of this award demonstrates a commitment to fostering the intellectual, creative, scholarly, and professional growth; shown a sustained commitment to a mentoring relationship resulting in career growth; and an overall history of service and mentorship to faculty. This award acknowledges the time and dedication faculty mentors devote to foster the career development and academic success of other faculty at the university.

DaShaunda Patterson

Dr. Patterson is a member of the faculty in the Department of Learning Sciences and the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Education and Human Development. She has developed and implemented mentoring initiatives that are outstanding in their scope and execution. Dr. Patterson’s signature programs, including the Faculty Mentoring program, the Part-Time Instructor Professional Learning Community, and the Faculty Allyship Network, combine individual, dyadic, and network mentoring elements. She also received her college’s 2024 Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award in recognition of her leadership in this area.

Dr. Matthews is a Professor of English and Interim Associate Department Chair at Perimeter College. She has an exceptional record of mentoring faculty in the areas of teaching and professional development. In addition to working one-on-one with faculty in her department, Dr. Matthews mentors cohorts of part-time and pre-tenure faculty, including faculty who could benefit from her expertise in learning support. In recognition of her leadership in mentoring, she now leads all the mentoring initiatives in the English department.

Lara Dahl

Dr. Dahl is a Principal Lecturer of Oboe. She serves as the Woodwinds Coordinator, Graduate Director for the School of Music, and the inaugural Non-Tenure Track Faculty Advocate to the College of the Arts. She has developed an NTT-inclusive mentoring program in the College of the Arts and serves as President of Georgia State’s Non-Tenure Track Faculty Affinity Group. As Graduate Director for the School of Music, she oversees more than 80 graduate students from admission to graduation and has secured over $220,000 annually in external graduate assistantship funding. She also serves on the School of Music’s Executive Committee and on the University Senate.
Erica Tracey

Dr. Tracey is a Senior Lecturer in the Neuroscience Institute and the inaugural Katherine Bernhardt WomenLead Faculty Fellow. She single-handedly established a successful student internship program in the Neuroscience Institute and led the effort to create the Quality Assurance in Life Science Industries Certificate Program. Dr. Tracey has shown extraordinary commitment to creating community and promoting women’s leadership development, such as creating a signature experience class for the WomenLead student program and conducting workshops for Georgia State faculty and staff.

About This Award
The purpose of the Instructional Effectiveness Award is to recognize an instructor who demonstrates a strong commitment to teaching and student success and to share at the university level outstanding approaches in instruction that are creative and effective in engaging students in the learning process. All GSU full-time faculty are eligible to apply. The evaluation criteria are the strength of the learning principles or theories, the persuasiveness of the analyses of evidence of learning effectiveness, and the potential of the approach as a model for application across other courses and programs.

Instructional Effectiveness Award
Sarah G. Clark
Lecturer

Dr. Clark is a Lecturer and Associate Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Neuroscience in the College of Arts and Sciences. She is being recognized for developing the Introduction to Neuroscience Research course. Dr. Clark adapted a validated course structure typically used in Biology and obtained RISE and CETLOE grants to support her efforts. Her early evaluations of the course’s success demonstrated that students who completed the course ultimately did better in their 4000-level lab course, engaged in ongoing research with faculty, and presented their research.
About This Award
The purpose of the Instructional Innovation Award is to recognize and share at the university level outstanding innovations in teaching that result in improved learning. This award recognizes innovative teaching practices designed to improve student learning in online, blended, or face-to-face courses. Innovations may include any novel teaching strategy or tool designed to enhance student learning.

Christopher L. Brown
Principal Senior Lecturer

Dr. Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences. He is a leader in the use and development of the Robinson Country Intelligence Index, an Instructional Innovation and Technology Experiential Learning Initiative. His work with this initiative has supported over 3000 Georgia State students as they engage in hands-on learning practices. A four-year study he conducted with colleagues demonstrated that using this index in the Political Science Global Issues course, improved student performance and reduced DFW rates. He also obtained a $515,000 grant from the Gates Foundation to support this work.
About This Award
The purpose of this award is to recognize and reward instructors who integrate current social justice issues into their courses to better engage Georgia State students in order to help them to develop their social, emotional and expressive capacities. This award recognizes instructional strategies that have been used to successfully incorporate social justice themes into various disciplines and result in positive student outcomes.

Frank C. Lee

Dr. Lee is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Management in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. As part of his 2023 CETLOE Faculty Teaching Fellowship, he developed representative data sets used by thousands of Georgia State analytics students. Building on this work, Dr. Lee collaborated with Delta Airlines to create the Delta Analytic Academy, an analytics certificate program aimed at removing barriers to analytics careers. In multiple ways, Dr. Lee encourages students to examine social justice and equity issues in real world contexts.
About This Award
EPIC is the inaugural awardee of the Regents’ Award for Excellence in High-Impact Practices and Experiential Learning. It was established by the Board of Regents to recognize exceptional departments or programs among the USG’s 26 public colleges and universities that have demonstrated a strong commitment to integrating and enhancing high-impact practices within their curriculum, resulting in transformative learning experiences for students.
Experiential, Project-based, Interdisciplinary Curriculum (EPIC)
The EPIC Program integrates High Impact Practices into Georgia State’s foundational courses – improving student engagement, retention, and academic performance while equipping students with critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. The honorees include Dr. Ryan Carlin, Dr. Brennan Collins, Dr. Kathryn Crowther and Keyonna Sutton. Dr. Ryan Carlin is Professor of Political Science and serves as the Downtown Faculty Lead for the EPIC Program. Dr. Brennan Collins is a Principle Academic Professional in CETLOE and is the Director of the EPIC Program. Dr. Kathryn Crowther is a Professor of English and an Associate Director of Teaching Effectiveness in CETLOE where she directs the Writing Across the Curriculum program and serves as the Perimeter College Faculty Lead for the EPIC program. Keyonna Sutton is the Assistant Director of the Program Management Office in Instructional Innovation & Technology and serves as the program manager for the EPIC Program.
