Georgia State Recognizes Faculty Excellence through Distinguished University Professorships and University Awards

Provost Nicolle Parsons-Pollard has announced the appointment and reappointment of university faculty to its highest institutional-level faculty rank, the Distinguished University Professorship. This rank reflects a sustained and outstanding record in scholarship and instruction.

Robert Howard Honored by Southern Political Science Association

Newly-emeritus Professor Robert Howard of the Department of Political Science at the Georgia State University College of Arts & Sciences was recently honored by the Southern Political Science Association, Inc. for his accomplishments.

In recognition of his work and his service to the discipline and organization, the association’s Best Conference Paper Award was renamed in his honor. Dr. Howard served as the organization’s executive director from 2013 to 2024.

Georgia State University has appointed and reappointed faculty to its highest institutional-level faculty rank, the Distinguished University Professorship. The appointment of Distinguished University Professor at Georgia State is intended to recognize a sustained and outstanding record in scholarship and instruction, and to provide the impetus for continuing high achievement.

Geographer Carrie R. Freshour Earns American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship

Carrie R. Freshour, an assistant professor in the Department of Geosciences at Georgia State University, has been named a 2024 American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellow.

The ACLS Fellowship Program supports scholars who are poised to make original and significant contributions to knowledge in any field of the humanities or interpretive social sciences. This year, the program will award more than $3.6 million to 60 early career scholars.

Political Scientist Jennifer McCoy Earns Andrew Carnegie Fellowship to Further Research into Political Polarization

Jennifer McCoy, a Regents’ Professor in Georgia State’s Political Science Department, has been named a 2024 Andrew Carnegie Fellow.

McCoy is one of 28 to receive the Andrew Carnegie Fellowship, which is funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Fellows will receive stipends of $200,000 each for research that seeks to understand how and why our society has become so polarized, and how we can strengthen the forces of cohesion to fortify our democracy.

Do you know outstanding faculty, staff or students who deserve recognition for their international achievements? The Office of International Initiatives is accepting nominations for the annual International Education Awards.

Since 2012, the International Education Awards have recognized outstanding faculty, staff and students for their commitment to international education. Awards are given at the annual International Honorary Reception during International Education Week in November.
